idMe Message

I am a cyclist, MTB'er, athlete and mother and I enjoy every minute of it. But I have had more than a few close calls while enjoying the sports I love. For all of the cyclists, runners, triathletes out there on our city streets & back roads of our community, you know what I mean. I remember going on some excursions out to a friend's house, in the country, she would always say, "Call me when you get home, so I know you made it safely". This always concerned me that my family and friends were worried about me out on the roads on my bike, whether I was in town on my way to work or out on the rural roads. The only id I carried with me was an old driver's licence photo card (I would never carry the original of fear of losing it). Most of the time I forgot that as well. I knew that I could give my family peace of mind if only I could have id on me at all times, no matter where I was or what I was doing, just in case.
It then occurred to me that I was equally worried about my daughter not having id with her. At the age of 12, she has virtually no identity, no drivers licence, no listed address or phone number, just maybe a library card. We put more id on our dogs than we do our children yet our children are the ones at risk. My daughter knows my cell number, but what if she can't speak for herself or is unconscious? How will they (EMT's) know how to reach me? I know, too much to worry about right? Well as a parent, we want to protect our children as best we can but that doesn't mean we can't provide them will the tools to help themselves.
